The Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA) under the auspices of the Ministry of Railway on Wednesday, 25th August, 2021 engaged chiefs, assembly members, public and civil servants of the Bekwai Municipal Assembly for the construction of Eduabin-Obuasi section of the western railway line. This stretch of railway will pass through Asanso, Kensere and Pepedan in the Bekwai municipality to Obuasi.

The gathering was held to inform the stakeholders about this impending activity in the municipality.

The Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Kwaku Kyei Baffour in his opening remark said that, the construction of the railway line will create direct and indirect jobs in the affected towns. He further said that, the project when completed will reduce road traffic accidents, congestion and pollution on roads nationwide as the railway serves as an alternative means of transportation.

The delegation was made up of GRDA and SAL Consult members of staff. According to the leader of SAL Consult, Ing. Samuel Boadu, his team was consulted primarily to undertake environmental and social impact assessment. This involves engaging the assembly members, unit committee members, traditional authorities and opinion leaders of the affected towns. He explained that they will liaise with the Land Evaluation Department to value affected properties such as farms, houses etc. and compensate their owners accordingly.

Several concerns were raised by the chiefs, assembly members and heads of departments of the Assembly. The team vividly responded to all the concerns raised to the satisfaction of all.

The MCE in his closing remark thanked all participants for honouring his invitation. He encouraged them to co-operate with the project team for the benefit of the people in the affected towns. He further assured the team of his total commitment and co-operation.
