An Eight member census implementation committee for the Bekwai Municipal Assembly was on Thursday 20th February, 2020 inaugurated to oversee a successful implementation of the 2020 Population and Housing Census in the Municipality.

The Bekwai Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Kwaku Kyei Baffour who inaugurated the committee talked about the importance of the census.

He said there was the need for the census as it provides reliable and updated data which is essential in development planning and implementation of policies and programmes of government.

Hon. Kyei Baffour said the Population and Housing Census was critical for planning the Municipality as it will ensure judicious use of the Assembly’s available resources.

He assured the committee of his support during the exercise and pleaded with the general public to avail themselves to be counted.

The Municipal Chief Executive then tasked the committee to oversee a successful conduct of the census in the municipality.

On his part, Mr. Kwadwo Asante-Mensah, Director of Administration Ghana Statistical Service (Head office, Accra) educated the general public on the roles and responsibilities of the District Census Implementation Committee (DCIC).  He disclosed that 28th June, 2020 has been declared as census night and pleaded with the people in the Municipality to get prepared for this important exercise.

Mr. Kwadwo Asante-Mensah again said the introduction of technology in this year’s census will help obtain authentic and reliable data which will be readily available. He urged members of the census committee to ensure that qualified field officers were selected for the exercise. He reiterated the need for effective public education for the people to know the importance of the exercise. 

A representative of Traditional Council, Nana Opoku Ababio, was hopeful that with the caliber of people on the committee the exercise will be carried out successful.

The committee chaired by the Municipal Coordinating Director, Mr. Yaw Adu-Asamoah have Mr. Clement Adiyaa, District Census Officer, Mrs. Lucy Ama Ankrah, Municipal Education Director, Alhaji Abdul-Nasir Tijani, NCCE Director and Mrs Mary Turkson, Municipal Information Officer as members.

The other members are Mr. Clement Nti-Boateng, Municipal Health Director, Rasheed Gbadamosi, Human Resource Manager and Nana Opoku Ababio, Bekwai Traditional Council Rep.

In all, over two hundred (200) field enumerators are expected to be engaged for this exercise in the Municipality.

The slogan for 2020 Population and Housing Census is “You count, Get counted”.
