Bekwai, Ghana – On Thursday, 25th July 2024, the Bekwai Municipal Assembly (BMA) Conference Room hosted a significant stakeholder engagement session focused on the development of a Climate Risk and Vulnerability Information Portal for Bekwai Municipal. This initiative is part of Ghana's National Adaptation Plan (NAP), currently being developed by the government of Ghana through the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESTI). The project is supported by the Green Climate Fund (GCF) with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) serving as the delivery partner.
The engagement session aimed to gather input and facilitate collaboration among key stakeholders in Bekwai Municipal. The primary objective is to create a comprehensive portal that will provide sector institutions, local authorities, and other stakeholders with easy access to various datasets and mapping tools. This will enhance understanding of climate risk and vulnerability and support climate action in the region.
Bekwai Municipal has been selected as one of the beneficiary districts for the pilot phase of this project. A consultant has been appointed to develop the Pilot Climate Risk and Vulnerability Information Portal as part of the NAP readiness efforts. The African Foundation for Climate Change and Sustainable Development (AFCCSD) Consortium is facilitating the ongoing data collection and stakeholder engagement processes.
The event saw the participation of several notable figures, including the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Kwaku Kyei Baffour, the Municipal Coordinating Director (MCD), Dr. Francis Owusu-Ansah, heads of departments in BMA, selected Assembly Members, representatives from Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), and representatives from Persons living with Disabilities (PWDs).
This collaborative effort marks a crucial step in enhancing climate resilience and adaptive capacity in Bekwai Municipal, aligning with Ghana's broader goals of sustainable development and climate change mitigation.
