The Bekwai Municipal Assembly held its 40th Farmers' Day celebration on Friday, 8th November 2024, at Poano under the theme "Building Climate Resilient Agriculture for Sustainable Food Security." This significant event brought together dignitaries and community members to honor the hard work and resilience of farmers within the municipality.
Present at the event were the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Kwaku Kyei Baffour; Municipal Coordinating Director, Ms. Sheila Rosetta Arthur; Parliamentary Candidate for the Bekwai Constituency, Lawyer Ralph Poku-Adusei; Heads of Departments of the Bekwai Municipal Assembly, Chiefs and elders of Poano, and a cross-section of the public.
In his keynote address, Hon. Kwaku Kyei Baffour highlighted the critical role of agriculture in ensuring food security and resilience in the face of climate change. He acknowledged the farmers' efforts in sustaining food production and emphasized the importance of adopting climate-smart agricultural practices to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change on crop yields.
The Director of Agriculture of the Bekwai Municipal Assembly also addressed the audience, discussing various agricultural interventions the municipality is implementing to support farmers. These include improved seed varieties, irrigation projects, and training programs focused on sustainable farming practices.
Lawyer Ralph Poku-Adusei, Parliamentary Candidate for Bekwai, commended the farmers for their dedication and pledged his support for initiatives aimed at advancing agriculture in the region. He emphasized the need for continuous investment in agricultural technology and infrastructure to boost productivity and secure a sustainable food future.
The celebration was an opportunity to reflect on the strides made in the agricultural sector and reinforce the importance of climate-resilient farming for sustainable development. Awards were presented to outstanding farmers for their contributions, underscoring the community's appreciation and the Assembly's commitment to supporting the agricultural sector in Bekwai Municipality.
