The Department of Social Welfare and Community Development (SWCD) on its core mandate to promote and protect the rights of the child undertook a one-day sensitization programme at Amoamo a suburb of Bekwai in the Ashanti Region of Ghana on 5th April, 2022. The main reason for the visit into that community was that, there has been evolving issues with regards to streetism of children under the ages of eighteen (18) who are normally found on the major streets trading at school hours and others engage in all sorts of activities.
Numerous of these children have to hassle on the street to trade in order to provide for themselves. They endanger their lives by selling in the highway road where they can easily be hit by moving cars whiles others engage in all sorts of robbery and theft. With the growing number of street children engaging in all kinds of activities which normally leads to terrible behaviors and some of them losing their lives made the Department undertake a sensitization exercise on streetism at Amoamo.
Two officers from the Department undertook this sensitization exercise and three main points were discussed;
- The overview of streetism.
- The causes and effects of streetism.
- Ways in which streetism can be cramped.
The officers concluded that, to be able to prevent the issues of streetism and the dangers associated with it, the parents or the extended family should be able to provide physical support, emotional support and psychological support to the children. The community on the other hand needs to liaise with the traditional authorities and the district or municipal executives to have a proper plan for children who are normally on the street.
