BMA FAILS TO ELECT PM AGAIN

The Bekwai Municipal Assembly (BMA) on Friday, 1st July, 2022 failed to elect its Presiding Member (PM). Both candidates, Kofi Asante Bruce, the former Assembly Member for Sanfo-Aduam, and also government appointee, and Kwame Opoku Agyemang, who is an elected member of Dadease electoral area failed to acquire the constitutional two thirds votes needed. Thirty-Four (34) Assembly members, fifteen (15) government appointees and the Municipal Chief Executive, totaling 50 members, voted.

Hon. Kofi Asante Bruce polled 30 votes of the total votes cast, representing 60 percent and Hon. Kwame Opoku Agyemang also polled 20 votes of the total votes cast, representing 40 percent. The Electoral Commission conducted a second round of voting, at the end of the voting, Hon. Kofi Asante Bruce secured 29 votes of the total votes cast while Hon. Kwame Opoku Agyemang also obtained 21 votes of the total votes cast.

None of the two candidates were able to secure the two-thirds which is required for one of them to be sworn in as the Presiding Member. The Assembly members would be required to vote again in 10 days to elect a Presiding Member. The election was supervised by the Assistant Municipal Electoral Officer, Mr. Benimba and his National Service Personnels.
