The management of the Bekwai Municipal Assembly (BMA) convenes a Public Health Emergency Committee (PHEC) meeting on Thursday, 26th August, 2021 to discuss the upsurge in COVID-19 pandemic.
In attendance was the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) - Hon. Kwaku Kyei Baffour, Municipal Co-ordinating Director – Mr Daniel Osei-Asibey, Heads of Security Agencies, Municipal Health Director – Dr Frank Serebour and some Heads of Departments of the Assembly.
The meeting was in compliance with the directive issued by the Ashanti Regional Minister in a press statement titled “Upsurge in COVID-19 Pandemic” on the 3rd of August, 2021. This was to further strengthen the COVID-19 protocols to ensure a reduction in the spread of the COVID-19 delta variant.
The security agencies and the COVID taskforce were tasked to enforce the COVID protocols which includes:
- ensuring mandatory wearing of face masks in the communities;
- provision of Veronica Buckets at public places such as markets, lorry parks and health centres;
- provision of sanitizers at public places;
- making of public announcements to increase awareness of the new wave and the need to enforce the protocols;
- ensuring that all institutions and offices within the municipality provide Veronica Buckets and sanitizers at their entrance.
- enforcing all restrictions on public gatherings as spelt out in the President’s 26th Address to the Nation on the COVID situation. etc.
The Municipal Health Director also gave a brief COVID situation within the municipality. According to him, cumulatively, tested COVID cases for 2020 and 2021 stands at 1,690 of which positive cases were 423, this gives a positivity rate of 28.2%. Currently, there are 15 active cases and 20 cases awaiting results. A total of 621 people were vaccinated with the first dose of the Astra Zeneca and Sputnik V. He concluded that, there were 4 confirmed deaths of COVID-19. Hence, the taskforce in the coming days will ensure the COVID protocols are abided by in the communities.
The MCE thanked the committee for attending and promised to provide all the needed assistance to the taskforce to ensure the fight against the upsurge of the COVID-19 pandemic within the municipality is successful.
