BEKWAI MUNICIPAL ASSEMBLY HOLDS FARMERS DAY

The Bekwai Municipal like other Districts in the Ashanti Region celebrated this year’s farmer’s day with a grand durbar as more than 200 farmers exhibited some of their farm produce for the year.The celebration which was the 33rd farmer’s day celebration was held on 28th November, 2017 at Dwoamin under the theme “Farming for food and Jobs”.

The Municipal Chief Executive Hon. Kwaku Kyei Baffour in his speech thanked all the farmers in the Municipality for continuously producing food for the community and urged them to continue the good work they are doing. He reiterated government’s commitment of bringing out policies that will make farming one of the lucrative jobs to do.

Hon. Kyei Baffour said, government policies such as Mass Cocoa Spraying, Fertilizer Subsidy, Planting for Food and Jobs, Technical Assistance etc, are all to support farmers improve their yields and to help improve their living conditions.

The District Director of Agriculture, Mr. Emmanuel Mensah reaffirmed his department’s readiness to collaborate with all stakeholders in the Agricultural sector for a fruitful outcome. He also assured the farmers that his outfit will continue to support them in improving their yields. Mr. Mensah advised the youth in the municipality to take advantage of government’s Planting for Food and Jobs policy to better their lives.

The Omanhene of Kokofu Traditional Council, Barima Offe Akwasi Okogyeasuo II who was supposed to chair the event but was represented by his Akwamuhene, Nana Owusu Adfriyie I, congratulated all the farmers for a good work done and encouraged them not to lose hope. He also pleaded with the Municipal Assembly as a matter of urgency to construct a market for the people of Dwoamin.

Farmers who distinguished themselves in the course of the year in their farming activities were presented with awards which ranked from Knapsack sprayer to Cutlass and fertilizer among others.

At the end, Nana Amankwa Kudom who is the also the chief of Adumasa was pronounced as the best farmer in the Municipality. He pleaded with government to construct at least one silo for farmers to store their farm produce.
He was presented with a Deep freezer, Knapsack Sprayer, Insecticides, Fertilizer, Cutlass among others.
