The Bekwai Municipal Assembly has on Friday, 28th May, 2021 launched the 30 – day countdown to the 2021 Population and Housing Census (PHC) in Bekwai. The 30–day countdown is to prepare and keep reminding the inhabitants in the Municipality about the important national exercise. The 30-day countdown also marks the beginning of a month long education and public awareness campaign leading to the official start of the exercise set for 27th June 2021 dubbed’ ’The census night’’.
Speaking at the launch, The Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Kwaku Kyei Baffour, called on residents in the municipality to fully support and participate in the upcoming Population and Housing Census. The MCE said the census is an important exercise and therefore urged residents of the municipality to ensure they are all counted. Touching on the importance of the census, Hon. Kwaku Kyei Baffour said, the population and Housing Census will provide data for the formulation of Government programmes and policies to help transform the economy.
He said the PHC will again provide data for assessing the number of houses, availability of utilities and sanitation conditions in the various communities. Hon. Kwaku Kyei Baffour again said, knowing how the population is changing will help to identify the most vulnerable in the communities, how and where to allocate social expenditures, quality of housing among others.
The MCE advised the officials of the Ghana Statistical Services and Enumerators who will partake in the upcoming exercise to ensure they visit every community they have been assigned to so as not to leave any Ghanaian behind. The Bekwai Municipal Coordinating Director, Mr. Osei Asibey, said aside providing an accurate account of people living in the Municipality, the Population and Housing Census will also provide the needed database for proper planning by the Assembly. He called on residents in the municipality to participate and co-operate with the census officials to ensure a successful exercise.
On his part, the Municipal Statistical Officer, Mr. Clement Karikari disclosed that the Ghana Statistical Service was mandated under the statistical Law 2021(ACT 1003) to carry out the census. He said the 2021 Population and Housing Census was originally planned for 2020 but was postponed to 2021 due to COVID-19 Pandemic.
Mr. Karikari mentioned that, the 2021 PHC which will start on the night of 27th June, will be the first digital census with the use of tablets for data collection. He said the introduction of technology in this year’s PHC will help provide accurate results and on time. Mr. Karikari pleaded with inhabitants in the Municipality to open up and give accurate information when Census Officials visit their homes.
Nana Opoku Ababio, Bekwai Adontenhene who represented Bekwaimanhene pleaded with the citizens to corporate with the census officials to make their work easier because the exercise is to their advantage. He pledged the support of Nananom to such an important national exercise.
Nananom, Heads of Departments, Hon. Assembly members, the Clergy, Muslim Community and all other relevant stakeholders who were present at the event took turns to ask relevant questions and seek clarifications from the census officials.
