2020 ORIENTATION AND TRAINING PROGRAMME FOR ASSEMBLY MEMBERS IN BEKWAI MUNICIPAL AND AMANSIE CENTRAL DISTRICT

On the 20th and 21st August 2020, a two-day orientation course for newly elected and appointed Assembly Members of the Bekwai Municipal and Amansie Central District has ended with a call on members to unite devoid of political differences for the development of each Municipality and District.

The Bekwai Municipal Coordinating Director called on Assembly Members and Government Appointees to carry out their duties diligently as worthy representatives of their electorates. Speaking at the gathering, he made it clear the Institute of Local Government is a Government of Ghana institution established in 1999 with the mandate to educate it members in public management and development and also the institute is backed by Act of Parliament 647 of 2003 and is meant to enable all Assembly Members to know more about Local Government in order to equip them to deliver and make impact wherever they find themselves. He went on to advise all Assembly Members to play major role in developing their communities at the grassroot level and also reduce poverty.

After delivering his message to the Assembly Members, Mr. Andrews Bediako a staff of Local Government Accra expressed the hope that the course would equip the members to play their oversight role effectively.

The participants were taken through contemporary issues in Local Governance, the roles and responsibilities of District Assembly functionaries.

He urged the participants to find full meaning to the training received by applying the knowledge acquired in the discharge of their functions to ensure the progress of the Assembly.

He commended the Assembly Members for availing themselves for the exercise and edged them that once they offer themselves to serve the people, they must be acquainted with the laws, and guidelines of assembly business in order to dovetail well into the scheme of things. He went further to advise all the Assembly Members to develop the interest, priorities and actions that will transform the local environment. He also said the Assembly is a public institution which can sue and could be sued and this underlined the importance to which Assembly Members must attach to such exercises to orient themselves to avoid possible anomalies on the floor or legal collisions with any member of their jurisdiction.
