On Friday, 25th April 2025, the Parliamentary Committee on Sanitation and Water Resources paid a working visit to the Bekwai Municipality to assess the state of sanitation in the area. The visit commenced with a meeting held at the Yeguaa International Hotel Conference Hall in Bekwai.

The Municipal Coordinating Director (MCD), Ms. Sheila Rosetta Arthur, warmly welcomed the Honourable Members of Parliament, their entourages, and officials from Zoomlion Ghana Ltd. She expressed appreciation for their visit and assured them of a fruitful deliberation.

Mr. Felix Gyil, Head of the Environmental Health and Sanitation Unit, gave a briefing on the current sanitation challenges in the municipality. He highlighted key issues including:

  • Inadequate dustbins and waste containers;
  • Poor road conditions leading to the dumping site;
  • Delays in waste collection by Zoomlion.

Currently, the municipality has 16 waste containers, of which two are damaged and one has gone missing. Mr. Gyil recommended the establishment of a recycling depot, which would not only improve waste management but also create employment opportunities for the youth and benefit neighboring communities.

The Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Oti Bless, commended Ms. Arthur for her active involvement in the engagement, noting that such dedication was not observed in other municipalities the committee had visited.

Hon. Ralph Poku-Adusei, Member of Parliament for the Bekwai Constituency and a member of the committee, also addressed the gathering. He acknowledged the unique sanitation challenges faced by Bekwai and assured stakeholders that further engagements would be held with the MCD to develop sustainable solutions.

The committee later visited the dumping site at Zongo to inspect conditions firsthand.

The meeting was attended by Heads of Departments, the MCD, and members of the Parliamentary Committee on Sanitation and Water Resources.
