A total of 127 Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in the Bekwai Municipality have benefited from the distribution of livelihood equipment, assistive devices, educational assistance and other forms of support under the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF).

The programme, organised by the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development of the Bekwai Municipal Assembly, aimed to promote economic empowerment, improve livelihoods and enhance the independence of beneficiaries.

The items distributed included deep freezers, fufu-pounding machines, wheelbarrows, industrial sewing machines, wheelchairs, white canes, ovens and other equipment. Some beneficiaries also received medical assistance, school fees support, trading capital and assistance for leg amputation.

Addressing participants at the programme, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Bekwai, Hon. Salifu Issaka, expressed appreciation to the government for its continued support for Persons with Disabilities. He also apologised for delays in the distribution, explaining that the numerous applications received required the necessary assessment and approval processes.

The MCE encouraged Persons with Disabilities in the municipality to register with the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development to enable the Assembly to maintain an accurate database, identify their needs and facilitate access to available support.

The Director of the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development, Mr. Ibrahim Antwi, urged beneficiaries to take proper care of the items received and use them for their intended purposes. He also encouraged disability associations to promote unity and welcome more members to strengthen their collective representation.

The President of the Ghana Society of the Physically Disabled (GSPD), Mr. Abdullah Adubofour, expressed appreciation to the government for its support and called for improved accessibility in public institutions. He further encouraged families to support Persons with Disabilities in pursuing productive and dignified livelihoods.

Madam Dora Adomako of the Business Resource Centre also educated beneficiaries on the importance of maintaining the equipment and using it for income-generating activities to ensure long-term benefits.

The initiative forms part of efforts to promote inclusion, self-reliance and equal opportunities for Persons with Disabilities while enabling them to participate more actively in the economic and social development of their communities.
