The Bekwai Municipal Assembly through the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development conducted a child neglect sensitization programme across selected communities in the municipality between 21st January and 24th February 2026 as part of efforts to strengthen child protection and promote the welfare of children.
The sensitization exercise reached ten communities, namely Anwiankwanta, Sanfo Aduam, Ntinanko, Adjamesu, Koniyaw, Affulkrom, Essumeja, Asanso, and Amoafo, engaging a total of 10,446 participants, comprising 4,003 males and 6,443 females. The programme brought together parents, caregivers, children, traditional and religious leaders, teachers, Assembly Members, community-based organizations, and other stakeholders.
Participants were educated on the causes, forms, and effects of child neglect, including physical, educational, medical, emotional, and supervisory neglect. The programme also emphasized the responsibilities of parents and caregivers to provide children with adequate food, shelter, healthcare, education, supervision, and emotional support, while encouraging community members to report suspected cases of child neglect to the appropriate authorities.
Interactive discussions and question-and-answer sessions provided community members with the opportunity to share experiences, discuss challenges affecting child welfare, and explore practical measures for preventing child neglect. The engagements also highlighted the importance of positive parenting, community participation, and collaboration among stakeholders in safeguarding the rights and well-being of children.
The sensitization programme forms part of the Bekwai Municipal Assembly's commitment to strengthening child protection systems, promoting responsible parenting, and ensuring that every child grows up in a safe, caring, and supportive environment.
