The Bekwai Municipal Assembly through the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development conducted a child labour sensitization programme across ten communities in the municipality between 21st January and 18th February 2026 as part of efforts to raise awareness on child labour and promote the protection of children's rights.
The sensitization exercise covered the communities of Chiransa, Kensere, Nkyekyem, Ankaase, Denyasefokrom, Subriso, Edwenease, Pampaso, Dinkyeneso, and Affulkrom, reaching a total of 6,725 participants, comprising 2,913 males and 3,812 females. Participants included traditional leaders, opinion leaders, parents and guardians, religious leaders, youth groups, women's groups, and other community members.
The programme focused on increasing public understanding of child labour, distinguishing acceptable child work from hazardous child labour, promoting regular school attendance, and educating participants on the harmful effects of child labour on children's health, education, and overall development. Community members were also sensitized on children's rights, child protection laws, and the importance of reporting suspected cases of child labour to the appropriate authorities.
Interactive discussions, community meetings, question-and-answer sessions, and practical demonstrations enabled participants to identify the causes of child labour within their communities and propose measures to prevent the practice. The engagements also encouraged stronger collaboration among parents, traditional authorities, schools, and other stakeholders in safeguarding the welfare of children.
