Bekwai, Ashanti Region – June 24, 2025 - In a significant step towards promoting menstrual hygiene and supporting girls' education, the Bekwai Municipal Assembly on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, officially handed over 44,954 pieces of sanitary pads to the Municipal Directorate of Education for onward distribution to basic and second-cycle schools in the municipality.
The gesture forms part of the President's Free Sanitary Pads Initiative, aimed at reducing absenteeism among adolescent girls during their menstrual periods and ensuring that no girl stays out of school due to a lack of sanitary products.
The brief but impactful ceremony was held at the Bekwai Education Directorate, where the sanitary pads were formally presented by officials from the Municipal Assembly to the Municipal Director of Education.
In his remarks, the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Issaka Salifu emphasized the government’s commitment to improving girls’ access to education through practical interventions such as the free sanitary pad policy. He noted that education and menstrual hygiene go hand in hand and expressed hope that the items would be distributed promptly and fairly across all schools in the municipality.

The Municipal Director of Education, on receiving the items, expressed heartfelt appreciation to the President and the Assembly for the timely intervention. She assured that the Directorate would ensure efficient distribution to all beneficiary schools, with special attention to reaching girls in underserved communities.
School authorities and education stakeholders present at the ceremony commended the initiative as a game-changer in the fight against period poverty and a boost to girls’ confidence and attendance in school.
The event concluded with a renewed call for continuous advocacy and support for girl-child education at all levels.
